Generic name for the most popular short-term bronchodilator prescribed for asthmatics. It works to loosen the thread-like muscles that tighten around and constrict airways during an asthma flare. Also prevents and reverses airway narrowing. It is generally prescribed to be used as needed, since it has little preventive effect except perhaps on exercise-induced asthma. Common trade names include Proventil and Ventolin. It can be inhaled via MDI or nebulized solution. Timed-release albuterol is prescribed for short-term use and is available as oral syrup and tablets. Side effects may include dry mouth, irritated throat, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, heartburn, loss of appetite, altered taste sensation. restlessness, anxiety, nervousness, trembling, heart palpitations and sweating but should subside as the body adjusts to the medication.
