Someone who serves another by working for their benefit and obeying their commands. Thus almost all slaves are also servants, since their owner requires their service and has the authority to obtain it. However, servant is frequently used to refer to submissives who are not slaves, but are rather in Ongoing Voluntary Submission. Servant is also used as a level of experience, to signify that someone has lived in this condition, in the four-point experience scale: none, novice, servant and slave.

In the 18th Century, this term could mean several things. Generally, each officer was allowed to take one soldier of his company to be his bat-man. High-ranking officers could have several. In the Southern Campaigns, many servants, both men and women, were taken from freed Blacks. An indentured servant could be a white person contracted to serve a craftsman or similar person for a fixed number of years in exchange for food, clothing, shelter and education. Servant was often used to refer to slaves.

Servant was a Christian rock group that grew out of the counter-culture Jesus Movement of the sixties and seventies. The band was founded by evangelist Jim Palosaari in Victoria, British Columbia in 1976 and performed to audiences throughout North America, Europe and Australia for over 12 years. Originally named “Higher Ground”, Servant was known for challenging the Christian church to repent and turn back to social justice and caring for the poor.
