Championships require that a dog have a prior placement in order to be able to run the championship, or in other words, to “qualify” the dog. Most championships require a derby placement, but several require a shooting dog placement. For ‘open' championships, the placement needs to be in an open trial, for amateur championships, an amateur placement in a derby or shooting dog is necessary.
