when a horse/rider incur penalties during competition, such as knocking down a fence or covering the course too slowly
Penalty assessed in jumper classes for mistakes such as knockdowns, refusals, and exceeding the time allowed. In Table II classes (time first jump-off) touches of the rails does not count, only knockdowns and a refusal to jump are penalized. There may also be a time limit or time allowed to complete the course. For each second or fraction of a second over the official time allowed for the course, time faults will be assigned. In Table III classes, generally known as 'speed classes', touches are not scored, only knockdowns and refusals. The combination of the time taken to complete the course with the number of faults converted into seconds, determines the score for the rider. In the unlikely event that there is a tie for first place, then a jump-off will take place to determine the winner. In all jumper classes, a fall and going 'off course' (not following the assigned route) results in elimination.
