Annam refers to two different areas of what is now the country of Vietnam. The first territory which Annam refers is the territory that surrounds the city of Hanoi and runs from the Gulf of Tonkin to the mountains which surround the plains of the Red River. Annam (or Peaceful South) is one of several names which the Chinese gave to their southern-most province.
Annam was one of the many names used to describe the southern-most province of the Chinese Empire. It is now part of present-day Vietnam.
