Container of attributes that describes a person or other entity. A directory consists of entries that can be searched and returned to client programs. (Database term: record).

A directory entry. This may be either a file or directory. or An item recorded in the Index by the Message Server, such as a message, service, folder, or attachment. Each Index entry (and so each item) is uniquely identified by an ID field. See also: attribute

In the context of a directory service, entries are the building blocks of a directory. An entry is a collection of information about an object in the directory. Each entry is composed of a set of attributes that describe one particular trait of the object. For example, if a directory entry describes a person, that entry can have attributes such as first name, last name, telephone number, or e-mail address.

A Directory Service contains entries on people, organisations, countries, etc. Entries belong to a certain object class, and information on entries is stored in attributes (see section 2.1.1).

In COBOL, any descriptive set of consecutive clauses stopped by a separator period and written in the Identification Division, Environment Division, or Data Division of a COBOL program. In the DCE X/Open Directory Service, the part of the directory information base (DIB) that contains information relating to a single directory object. Each entry consists of directory attributes.

The name given to a stored object in a LDAP enabled directory. Each entry has one parent entry (object) and zero or more child entries (objects).
