The protagonist of the monomyth described by Campbell and Leeming. Such characters tend to be both round and dynamic. According to Frazer, the hero's forerunners were the shaman and the divine king, figures who had direct access to extraordinary spiritual energies. Through psychological identification with these figures, a community could vicariously gain access to spiritual energies. As this suggests, heroes are those with whom we tend to identify ourselves; they are our proxies. The hero's quest for individuation symbolizes the journey we must all make.

One, he said, is the physical deed, in which the hero performs a courageous act and saves a life. The other kind is the spiritual deed, in which the hero learns to experience the supernormal range of human life and then comes back with a message (a lesson, a gift, an idea) to share.

"Hero" is a pop song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff, and recorded for Carey's fourth album Music Box (1993). Its protagonist declares that even though we may feel discouraged or down at times, in reality we are all "heroes" if we look inside ourselves and see our own inner strength; in time, this will help us "find the way". It was released as the album's second single in the fourth quarter of 1993 (see 1993 in music) and became a worldwide commercial success.

The name Devon Aidendale is given to him in strategy guides and other documents where a "formal name" has to be given to the character.
