Where part of a stream is compressed between two obstructions which causes the water to speed up. It is usually the deepest and safest route.

A clear channel between obstructions, steeper and faster than the surrounding water.

A very steep gully. A very common site for rock fall so beware

this is usualy steeper than a gully, and may be subject to rockfall.

A section of river that flows between two large obstructions, compressing the water and causing a swift current.

A high velocity, open channel (lined with rip-rap) for conveying water down a steep slope without erosion.

A very steep gully. (Chute is French for "fall," and refers to the rockfall often found in such gullies.)
