A prophetic figure concerned about righteous behavior and purification, mentioned in the New Testament and in Josephus. Because his concerns align so well with those of the Qumran community, some have suggested that he might have spent time in that sect, but there is no hard evidence to prove this.

(Hazrat Yahya): a great prophet who lived from around 4 BC to around 30 AD. He was a forerunner of Jesus and prepared the way for Him. He urged people to repent of their sins and baptised them in the River Jordan.

John the Baptist (also called John the Baptiser, or Yahya the Baptiser) was a 1st century Jewish preacher and ascetic regarded as a prophet by four religions: Christianity, Islam, Mandaeanism, and the Bahá'í Faith. This is asserted in the Synoptic Gospels, the Qur'an and the Bahá'í Writings.

John the Baptist (sometimes called John in the Wilderness) was the subject of at least eight paintings by the Italian Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610).
