Sea Mile or Nautical Mile. The unit of distance used at sea. It is the distance on the earth's surface subtended by one minute of Latitude at the earths centre. Because the earth is not a perfect sphere, a nautical mile varies with Latitude, being shortest at the equator and greatest at the pole. Its mean distance is 6077 feet, but this is rounded up to 6080 feet. In practice for most purposes it is taken as 6000 feet. It is divided into ten equal cables of 600 feet or 1000 fathoms of 6 feet.
