A Native American social event with a Plains Indian orientation that has taken a standard form around dancing. Pow wows have their own particular etiquette. The origin of the term is Proto-Eastern Algonquian for a religious ceremony. The first so-called pow wow was in 1804 when Omaha tribe hosted Lewis and Clark in present Nebraska.
