A mixing of breeds or stock, especially in cattle breeding; or the product of such intermixture; a hybrid of any kind.
To cause to interbreed; -- said of different stocks or races; to mix the breed of.
To interbreed, as races; to mix distinct breeds.
Refers to the fertilization of one species female gametes with the male gametes of a different species. In the animal kingdom, for instance, a mule is a horse crossed with a donkey. The whole thing can only work when everything has the correct number of chromosomes. The result is an individual having some mix of the qualities of both parents. When all goes well, the mix is favorable, the resultant individual inheriting the most desirable traits of each parent. When it doesn't, might say that in rose breeding, everyone has their own cross to bear.
Similar to a hybrid, a cross is the result of cross-pollination between vines of the same species.
See Hybrid

breed animals or plants using parents of different races and varieties; "cross a horse and a donkey"; "Mendel tried crossbreeding"; "these species do not interbreed"
In breeding dogs, this is referring to the parents of a certain litter; as in "this cross produced outstanding bear dogs".
(To) ( Genet.). Fertilization of the female gametes of one individual by the male gametes of another, whether in nature or artificially. Often restricted to the crossing of individuals of unlike genetic constitution. Also the individual so formed. Cf. Self; Hybrid. ( BCFT).

The "noble" Cabernet-Sauvignon was crossed with the "common" Carignane to arrive at the Ruby Cabernet grape, a cross intended to produce a variety capable of surviving the hot climes of the Central Valley well enough to produce a decent wine.
The mating of a female and male of an animal or plant species. If the parents are unrelated, the offspring is called a hybrid.
