3-chloro-10-(2-dimethylaminopropyl) phenothiazine. White or cream coloured powder; m.p. 194-197 degree Celcius. It is a major tranquilizer, also an antiemetic. The chlorine-free compound promazine, is widely used as a minor tranquilizer and as an adjunct to anaesthesia.

Chlorpromazine was the first antipsychotic drug, used during the 1950s and 1960s. Used as chlorpromazine hydrochloride and sold under the tradenames Largactil® and Thorazine®, it has sedative, hypotensive and antiemetic properties as well as anticholinergic and antidopaminergic effects. It also has anxiolytic (alleviation of anxiety) properties.
