A group of class es. Every class in the system belongs to exactly one category. Classes are grouped into categories purely for organizational purposes; all classes in all categories are globally available. also protocol.

A group of parameters that monitor specific areas of an Oracle installation. In PATROL for Oracle, a category is similar to an application class. See also application class.

In the Objective-C language, a set of method definitions that is segregated from the rest of the class definition. Categories can be used to split a class definition into parts, or to add methods to an existing class.

A collection of sites and other categories sharing a common attribute. The Open Directory Project is organized in a heirarchy of categories.

Under most languages, a logical grouping of related classes. The OO-Browser does not yet have any support for this kind of category. Under Objective-C, a category is a partial class definition that implements a related set of methods. The full class definition is formed from the conjunction of all of the class' categories. The OO-Browser does support Objective-C category browsing.
