A term used to describe the act of young ladies going through the process of becoming "available" for marriage. The young lady would be about seventeen when this event took place. The process of coming out usually entailed the young lady, under the guide of a chaperone, attending formal balls and other social functions were she would be introduced to available young gentlemen
