a cocktail made of gin or vodka and dry vermouth
An alcoholic beverage made with gin and vermouth, then garnished with a green olive or a lemon twist. A "dry" martini contains less vermouth. A "vodka martini" uses vodka instead of gin.
The martini is a cocktail traditionally made with gin and dry white vermouth, though in recent years substituting vodka for gin has become more popular than the original recipe. It is often described as being "crisp" or "astringent." Over the years, the martini has become perhaps the most well-known mixed alcoholic beverage.
Martini is a brand of Italian vermouth, named after the Martini & Rossi distillery in Turin which was partly founded by Alessandro Martini.
