The term arrived in English via French, having originated centuries earlier among Germanic/Frankish tribes of Gaul. An unreasoning impulse, blind devotion to duty (such as military devotion), but commonly misused. Best to sidestep it. A Nationalist may refer to himself as a "fanatic" on occasion, meaning one passionately devoted to his cause. Unwise to refer to opposition as bigots, because it may suggest that blind devotion is an unfavorable trait, which is not always so.
