Polymorphonuclear leukocytes are large granular white blood cells (namely neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils) that have the capacity for phagocytosis (destruction by ingestion) of foreign cells and materials. In addition, these cells, when stimulated, can degranulate and release chemicals such as histamine into the blood stream.
