Umar ibn al-Khattāb (in Arabic, عمر بن الخطاب) (c. 580 – august 7, 644), sometimes referred by Sunni Muslims as `Umar al-FarÅ«q (Umar the Distinguisher (between Truth and Falsehood)), also known in English as Omar or Umar, was from the Banu Adi clan of the Quraysh tribe. He was a companion of Muhammad and became the second Caliph (634 – 644) following the death of Abu Bakr, the first Caliph.
