A red flowered annual herb that is better known as Hibiscus sabdariffa. It is a tropical plant that is commonly used in jams, jellies, sauces and teas. It provides a tart, refreshing flavor to these foods and drinks.
The Blue Mountain label is given only to beans grown at high altitudes in a very limited region (the parishes of Portland, Saint Thomas, and Saint Andrews). There are two other inferior grades “High Mountain Supreme†and “Prime Washed Jamaicaâ€. Consumers should be wary of fraudulent labels containing the words “Blue†or “Mountainâ€, which are sometimes tacked on to beans of very dubious origin.
