Crude oil with a low API gravity (high specific gravity).
crude oil of 20 degree API gravity or less; often very thick and viscous.
Oil with a gravity below 28 degrees API. Recovery generally involves an application of heat and steam. Canadian pipelines generally require oil to have a gravity of at least 21:2 degrees API. Heavier crudes must be blended with condensate or NGLs to be shipped by pipeline.
Crude oil that is more difficult to pump and process due to a higher viscosity.
Crude oil with a high specific gravity and a low API gravity due to the presence of a high proportion of heavy hydrocarbon fractions.
