The spar supporting the top of a sail. On a lug rig such as the Swallow had, the yard is set at an angle from the horizontal. The yardarm is the not the entire yard but rather a short end on the yard beyond where the sail is attached on a square-rigged ship.
Horizontal spar that holds up the sails.
A long, nearly cylindrical piece of timber, tapering toward the ends, used for supporting and extending a sail to the wind.
A horizontal spar from which a square sail is suspended
a long spar suspended from the mast of a vessel to extend sails.
The spar at right angle to a mast that the head of a square sail is connected to. The yard can pivot (be braced) around the mast. At rest (braced square) the yard runs athwartships. Each yard takes its name from the section of mast that supports it, and the sails take their names from the yards.
a long horizontal spar tapered at the end and used to support and spread a square sail or lateen
a spar (pole, rod) set at right angles to a mast, usually holding the top and bottom of a square-rigged sail on both sides of a mast
a spar slung from a mast to support and extend sails
The spar supporting the top of a lugsail. It is set at an angle from the horizontal.
In yachts with square sails - the spar on which the sail is suspended.

A term applied to a spar attached at its middle portion to a mast and running athwartship across a vessel as a support for a square sail.
A sturdy horizontal pole ( spar) held aloft at right angles to a mast used to support a sail. (Differs from a boom by being attached to the mast at the center rather than the end.) (See sail illustration.)
spar attached to the mast and used to hoist square sails.
A yard is a spar on a mast from which sails are set, constructed from either timber or steel. Although some types of fore and aft rigs have yards (see below), the term is usually used to describe the horizontal spars used with square sails. In addition, for some decades after sails were dispensed with, some yards were retained for deploying wireless (radio) aerials and signal flags.
