Note that this is only one of many ways of referring to the self - watakushi (very formal, used by royalty etc.), atashi (slightly flirtatious, girls only) and boku (tough guy speak) being three - but watashi is the most common and the most polite without sounding overly formal, and the one you should probably use if you're in any doubt.
