The unsaturated region between the soil surface and water table.
The zone of aeration (also referred to as the unsaturated zone) in the earth's crust above the groundwater level.
The part of the soil solum that is generally unsaturated.
The unsaturated zone that occurs above the water table where the soil pores are only partially filled with water (the moisture content is less than the porosity). This zone is limited above by the land surface and below by the surface of the saturated zone, that is, the water table.
The zone between land surface and the water table within which the moisture content is less than saturation (except in the capillary fringe) and pressure is less than atmospheric. Soil pore spaces also typically contain air or other gases. The capillary fringe is included in the vadose zone.
The zone containing water under less pressure than that of the atmosphere, including soil water, intermediate vadose water, and capillary water. This zone is limited above by the land surface and below by the surface of the zone of saturation, that is, the water table.
Soil and rock that are below the land surface and above the water table. Pores contain both water and air. The vadose zone is also called the unsaturated zone since pores are not totally saturated with water.
The locus of points just above the water table where soil pores may either contain air or water. This is also called the zone of aeration.
A term sometimes used in place of unsaturated zone.
The area between the surface of the land and the aquifer water table in which the moisture content is less than the saturation point and the pressure is less than atmospheric.
The subsurface zone between the water table ( Zone of Saturation) and the land surface where some of the spaces between the soil particles are filled with air. Also referred to as the Unsaturated Zone or, less frequently, the Zone of Aeration.
The zone between ground surface and the regional water table. It includes the unsaturated zone and the capillary fringe ( tension saturated zone).
Unsaturated (not completely filled with water) zone lying between the earth's surface and the top of the ground water. Also known as unsaturated zone and zone of aeration.
Soils located above the groundwater table.
The vadose zone, also termed the unsaturated zone, is the portion of Earth between the land surface and the phreatic zone or zone of saturation ("vadose" is Latin for "shallow"). Water in the vadose zone has a pressure head less than atmospheric pressure, and is retained by a combination of adhesion (funiculary groundwater), and capillary action (capillary groundwater). If the vadose zone envelops soil, the water contained therein is termed soil moisture.
