Chardonnay is a wine that has been matured in oak barrels, but now, chardonnay matured in steel barrels has become popular, producing a somewhat lighter wine, hence the term 'unoaked'.

Wine that has not been fermented or matured in contact with oak. Unoaked wines are produced in stainless steel vats that fo not impart any characteristics into the wine.

Also known as unwooded, refers to wines that have been matured without contact with wood/oak such as in aging barrels. [ edit
