Board or paper that has not been treated with an alkaline reserve. See 'buffered'.
During the papermaking process, the buffering step is eliminated. If a buffer or alkaline compound is added during the papermaking process, the paper is acid free. When interleaving photographic materials, an unbuffered paper is preferred. An unbuffered sheet is vulnerable to migrating, atmospheric acids, and pollutants. Close Window
