A highly infectious disease of the eyes that is caused by bacteria and is the second leading cause of blindness in Asia and Africa.
an eye disease caused by an infectious agent similar to bacteria. Trachoma may eventually lead to blindness. Face-washing with clean water and soap can prevent the transmission of the disease, especially among children
Chronic infection of the eyelid and cornea. It is spread by contact with eye discharge from an infected sufferer. Insects can also transmit the bacteria. Can cause visual impairment and blindness.
Chronic infectious disease of the conjunctiva and cornea caused by bacteria. Occurs more commonly in people living in hot, dry climates. Untreated, it may lead to blindness when the scarring invades the cornea. Trachoma can be treated with antibiotics.

viral infection causing scarring on the corneal tissue
This is a leading cause of blindness in undeveloped parts of the world. It is caused by a parasite that affects the cornea and conjunctiva causing infection, inflammation and scarring. Scarring of the cornea is the eventual cause of blindness.
Chronic infection of the eyelid and cornea caused by a micro-organism that is spread by contact with eye discharge from an infected sufferer. Flies can also transmit the bacteria. Over time, the eyelid becomes scarred and turns inward. The eyelashes begin to scrape the eyeball and cornea, which eventually causes visual impairment and blindness. Worldwide, 84 million people are affected by trachoma. Clean water and good hygiene can prevent trachoma, while antibiotics can treat it early on. Inward-turning eyelids can be corrected with simple surgery performed by a nurse. (Information supplied by ORBIS International.)
