Definitions for "Toxicokinetics"
The rate of uptake and transformation of potentially toxic substances within a living system.
The process of the uptake of potentially toxic substances by the body, the biotransformation they undergo, the distribution of the substances and their metabolites in the tissues and the elimination of the substances and their metabolites from the body. Both the amounts and concentrations of the substances and their metabolites are studied. The term has essentially the same meaning as pharmacokinetics, but the latter term should be restricted to the study of pharmaceutical substances.
The study of the movement of xenobiotic chemical agents within the body (i.e. the absorption, distribution via the blood, metabolism and excretion), to provide key information for the assessment of possible toxicity at elevated doses. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with `pharmacokinetics' (see above) but the latter term applies more specifically to medicines or therapeutic agents.
