A disciple and companion of St. Paul. He was the son of a Greek and a Jewess, and his home was either at Derbe, or Lystra in Lycaonia. Paul set him apart as a minister of the new gospel, and after preaching in Macedonia and Achaia, he went, at Paul's request to Ephesus, and accompanied the apostle to Jerusalem. It was to him that the two epistles to Timothy were addressed by the apostle Paul. According to tradition, Timothy suffered martyrdom under Domitian.

Timothy (Greek: ; Timótheos meaning "to honor God") was a first-century Christian bishop who died about AD 80. Evidence from the New Testament also has him functioning as an apostolic delegate or coadjutor. Saint Timotheos is venerated as a saint and martyr by the Eastern Orthodox Church and in addition as an apostle by the Greek Orthodox Church, with his feast day on January 22 (old style calendar).
"Timothy" is a song written by Rupert Holmes and recorded by the Buoys in 1971, illustrating the unnerving story of three men trapped in a collapsed mine, two of whom apparently resort to cannibalism against the third (the titular character Timothy). Despite being censored or even banned outright by many U.S. radio stations due to its subject matter, the song managed to reach #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, making the Buoys one of the most unlikely one-hit wonders in American music history.
