The Early Years was a compilation of seven recordings Phil Ochs made for a Vanguard compilation in 1964 and twelve made at three Newport Folk Festivals in 1963, 1964 and 1966, the latter tracks previously released on the 1996 compilation Phil Ochs Live at Newport.

"The Early Years" contains the non-album singles Gasolin' released 1970-73 with the exception of "Uh-Lu-La-Lu" that was released in 1978. Especially the first seven songs released 1970-71 are interesting as they show a band looking for a musical identity. Still, you wonder why the record company did not finish the job by including all Gasolin' non-album singles and rare songs such as "Endelig jul igen" and "Dejlig er jorden".
