a refund of tax which has been overpaid
(also sometimes called a Tax Credit) – is an amount that reduces the tax to be paid by the full amount of the rebate. Tax rebates treat all taxpayers equally by giving the same amount of rebate regardless of income level.
A tax reduction allowed in certain circumstances. Tax rebates allow governments to encourage particular types of economic behaviour (e.g. saving for retirement) and to help out in special situations (e.g. non or low waged spouse).
