Selection against the extreme phenotypes in a population, so that the intermediate types are favored. (Contrast with disruptive selection.)
Selection favouring individuals in the middle of the distribution of phenotypes in a population and disfavouring the extremes. Also called normalizing selection.
the removal of those alleles that produce deviations from the average population phenotype by selection against all deviant individuals
Selection in which heterozygotes are favored over homozygotes, maintaining genetic stability.
Stabilizing selection, also known as purifying selection or negative selection, is a type of natural selection in which genetic diversity decreases as the population stabilizes on a particular trait value. Put another way, extreme values of the character are selected against. This is probably the most common mechanism of action for natural selection.
