A relatively short amino acid sequence that directs a protein to a specific location within the cell; also called signal peptide. One example is the N-terminal sequence of a nascent secretory or membrane protein that causes the growing polypeptide to cross the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum into the lumen; the signal sequence is cleaved in the process. Initial portion of newly synthesized protein( if protein is destined for secretion).
