Shrek is the protagonist from the children's book Shrek! and the films based on characters from it.

The Shrek film series is a series of six films, four of them feature films, two released (Shrek (2001), Shrek 2, 2004) and two in production (Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek 4, 2010), and two of them spin-offs (one released (Shrek 4-D (2003), and one in production (Puss in Boots: The Story of an Ogre Killer (2011). All of them are based on William Steig's picture book, Shrek!.

Shrek is a New Zealand merino sheep that gained international fame after he avoided being caught and sheared for six years. Merinos are normally sheared annually, but Shrek apparently hid in caves.
