Seedheads are structures that develop after the fertilization of a flower. In the case of nearly all flowering perennials, fertilization is carried out by insects, whereas in the case of grasses and other grass-like plants it is effected by the wind. A seedhead has two main functions: to protect the seed while it develops and then, once it has matured, to distribute it.
