Sarotherodon is a large genus of tilapiine cichlid fishes endemic to Africa inhabiting fresh, brackish, and salt water. The genus currently contains 19 species and subspecies. Members of this genus, as well as those of the genera Tilapia and Oreochromis, share the common name "tilapia".
