Slang for floorhand. ROUSTABOUT: Any unskilled, manual laborer on a rigsite. May be part of the drilling contractor's workforce, or may be on location temporarily for special operations. They are commonly hired to ensure that skilled personnel whot run an expensive drilling rig are not distracted by peripheral tasks, ranging from cleaning up a location, digging trenches, scraping paint and painting rig components. Although roustabouts typically work long hard days, this type of work can lead to more steady employment on a rig crew. SANDFRAC: Method of fracturing subsurface rock formations by injection of fluid and sand under high pressure to increase permeability. Fractures induced in the rock by the hydraulic pressure are kept open by the grains of sand.

Roughneck (or ruffneck) is a slang term for an unskilled or slightly skilled labourer in a number of industries. In particular, it is the official name of a semi-skilled role on a North American oil rig. In Australia, a roughneck is known as a Driller's Offsider.
