A shallow cavity under an overhanging cliff, which has no part completely beyond the reach of daylight.
A cavity formed by overhanging rocks, typically at the base of a cliff. Rock shelters are often referred to as 'caves' by laymen and can be significant for archaeology, but speleologists prefer to exclude them from the definition of a 'true' cave (qv) as they do not penetrate any distance into the rock, and generally have no dark zone.
