Ramana (also spelled Ramany, Azeri: Ramana, Ramanı; in full: Ramana qəsəbəsi — the Ramana settlement) is an urban-type settlement in Azerbaijan, within the Sabunchu district of Baku. Population (2005): 8,800.http://www.azstat.org/statinfo/demoqraphic/az/012.shtml According to a hypothesis, proposed in the Soviet era, the settlement derives its name from the Latin Romana and was established by the Roman troops,http://www.window2baku.com/eng/9001history_1.htm, http://baku.aznet.org/baku/ru/QOBUSTAN.HTM lead by Maximus Livius which were in this region for a short while in the 1st century. The fact that also strengthens this hypothesis is that the old inhabitants of the town used to refer to it as "Romany".
