Generic term for a variety of string instruments – plucked or bowed – from the Arab-Persian world. Made from a single block of wood, this lute, which was in vogue during the Mughal period, has a resonating chamber covered with goatskin.
A string instrument not much in vogue today. A rabab player is called rababiya.
