Definitions for "Qashqai"
A confederacy of tribes living in southwestern Iran and known for high quality antique tribal rugs. These sought after rugs have wool foundation dyed in red, piled with asymmetrical knots and having knot counts of around 70-170 knots per square inch. Most popular design includes a hexagon medallion with four hooks surrounded by hundreds of small geometric and animals motifs throughout the field. Frequently, rugs will have a colorful barber pole used as a selvage.
Name of a former politically confederation of southern Iranian nomadic tribes mainly: Shesh Boluki, Kashkuli Bozorg, Amaleh, Derrehshuri, Farsi Madan, and Kashkuli Kuchek. The regional trading center for these tribes is Shiraz. Most Gabeh carpets sold in the west are of Qashqai origin.
