A telephone line allowing unlimited service between two points at a special rate and not connected to the regular telephone network. Private lines are available for a number of uses, such as data transmission, fire and burglar alarm circuits, as well as voice transmission.

A transmission path that is dedicated to a customer and that is not connected to a switching facility of a telecommunications utility, except that a dedicated transmission path between switching facilities of interexchange carriers shall be considered a private line.
