A communications service between specific locations that involves dedicated circuits, private switching arrangements, and/or predefined transmission paths, whether virtual or physical.

A dedicated line provided by the telephone company.

A telephone line allowing unlimited service between two points at a special rate and not connected to the regular telephone network. Private lines are available for a number of uses, such as data transmission, fire and burglar alarm circuits, as well as voice transmission.

Also called a Point-to-Point circuit. A direct channel specifically dedicated for a customer's use between two specified locations. A private line is leased from a long distance carrier and/or a local telephone company depending on the physical distance between the locations. A transmission path that is dedicated to a customer and that is not connected to a switching facility of a telecommunications utility, except that a dedicated transmission path between switching facilities of interexchange carriers shall be considered a private line.
