Definitions for "Paralinguistic"
Non-linguistic behaviour (e.g. gesture, facial expression) which nonetheless has meaning and is communicative.
(Reber) The study of those aspects of communication that are not ‘purely’ linguistic, i.e. not morphophonemic, syntactic or semantic. Specifically, the meanings conveyed by tone of voice, pacing, pausing, emphasis, hems and haws, snorting, etc. qualify as paralinguistic. Note that some will use the term so as to include social mannerisms, gestures, facial expressions and the like. A paralinguistic analysis of an utterance or a discourse is one which concerned primarily with how something is said rather than with the actual words used.
