An upright megalithic slab forming part of a larger structure.
( plural orthostats), a stone slab stood on its narrow end in order to face the lower part of a wall, a well-known technique in Minoan architecture and also used (less frequently) in Egypt (e.g. the black basalt orthostats employed in the 5th dynasty pyramid temple of Sahure).
