An oppidum Latin oppidum, from an earlier Latin ob-pedum, "enclosed space". Pedum itself could derive from Proto-Indo-European *pedóm-, 'occupied space' and/or 'footprint'. (pl: oppida) was Latin for the main settlement in any administrative area of the Roman Empire.
