The process by which normal cells turn cancerous. A sequence of cytological, genetic and cellular changes causes the formation and development of tumors. Also called tumorigenesis.
The generation of a tumour, which initially involves the conversion of a cell to a tumour cell by, e.g., activation of oncogenes and/or loss of tumour suppressor genes as a result of mutation.
