simple eye, measures day length
one of the simple eyes of insects, usually occurring in a group of three on top of the head
( ocelli, pl.): A simple eye on an insect's head. (Fig. 1)
the 'simple eye' of many adult insects which consists of a single bead-like lens. Insects may have a single ocellus or they may have a small group of ocelli (up to three). Ocelli may also be absent in some insects.
an eye having a single lens
an eyelike marking (as on the wings of some butterflies); usually a spot of color inside a ring of another color
an intracuticular organ built in the shape of an upside-down cone whose base faces out and contains a convex corneal lens, while its truncated apex faces inwards and from it extends the ocellar nerve
(pl: ocelli) simple eye consisting of a single lens. Simple eyes often occur in patterns of three in many insects.
One of two (or one of three) very small, simple eyes on the top of the head of some adult insects.
(pl. ocelli) The simple or single-faceted eye found above the compound eye and behind the antennae in most adult Lepidoptera. An ocellus has a single photo-receptor cell. See stemma.
Light colored horizontal bar on back of ear encircled by a band of another (darker) color; often referred to as “night eyes”. A desirable trait in the American Bobtail and the Savannah.
A simple eye, consisting of a single, usually round or oval facet. Hymenoptera usually have three ocelli: one median (anterior) and two lateral (posterior).
an eye-shaped spot on the wing or feather of certain animals
(Oh- sell-us; plural: ocelli [oh- sell-ee]): the simple eye of some insects, sensitive to light but does not form visual images.
(pl. ocelli) simple eyes between the large compound eyes
A marking that resembles an eye, eye-like colored spot; an eyespot.
A spot of color encircled by a band of another color.
(plural ocelli) Ocelli (also called stemma, pl. stemmata) are small, simple eyes that insects have. They are composed of photoreceptors (light-sensitive cells) and pigments. Ocelli are usually located on the larva's head or between an adult insect's two compound eyes. Moths have a pair of ocelli.
An ocellus (plural: ocelli) is a type of photoreceptor organ in animals. Also called "simple eyes", ocelli are miniature eyes capable of sensing light but not distinguishing its direction. See also stemmata, which are structurally similar.
