The Numismatics Section meets regularly to inspect Channel Island coins, bank notes, tokens, medals and other items related to numismatics. Members are encouraged to bring along items for discussion and inspection. Minutes of the meetings are circulated and are supplemented with a bibliographical note on works relating to Channel Islands numismatics. Occasional papers are produced recording Royal Mint correspondence relating to Jersey and detailed listings of tokens, trading checks, Parish bank notes and similar matters. The Section corresponds with researchers in other areas about Armorican coins and local coin finds. It also undertakes to identify coins and is specially interested in anything that may be found locally.

Numismatics is the scientific study of currency and its history in all its varied forms. While numismatists are often characterized as students or collectors of coins, the discipline also includes a much larger study of payment media used to resolve debts and the exchange of goods. Lacking a structured monetary system, people in the past as well as some today lived in a barter society and used locally found items of inherent or implied value.
