The stage in the refining process in which all free fatty acids in crude oils are removed by alkalis.

Removal of free fatty acids (FFA), hydratable and non-hydratable phosphatides, trace metals and color bodies (precipitated by mixing and reacting with caustic) by centrifugal separation. The process is most often preceded by acid conditioned.
