n. Acronym for Network Data Management Protocol. An open protocol for network-based backups of file servers that allows platform-independent data storage. See also backup, communications protocol, file server.
NDMP, or Network Data Management Protocol, is a protocol invented by the Net App and Legato companies, meant to transport data between NAS devices, also known as filers, and backup devices. This removes the need for transporting the data through the backup server itself, thus enhancing speed and removing load from the backup server.
